Can I scope a Mosin Nagant?

While the 7.62x54R Mosin Nagant is a fine rifle and the surplus ammo is a bargain. The original scoped models are fairly pricey. Around $450 from what I've seen.

Is it possible to mount a modern scope on a Mosin Nagant rifle that never had a scope? If so do you need a certain model Mosin Nagant?

elroy I have heard of people putting scopes onto those on other forums before. Check out the AR-15 forums, I believe I saw people doing it over there.

I bought one of the cheapo mounts off of ebay. JUNK! It could not handle the recoil and didn't last very long at all. Both the mount and the screws were cheap materials. Save the $20.00 for something else.

A lot of folks are recommending the link below so I will probably try that mount next.

Looks like it is about $65.00 and I haven't heard any negatives yet. I'm ordering one this weekend and will report back in a few weeks.

There is also an ATI bolt and mount combo but I don't want to mess with my bolt. I want to keep my rifle as original as possible and be able to reattach the iron sights if needed.

There is also another mount made by S&K.

So yeah, you have a lot of options. :) Only recommendation I have is to avoid the ebay cheapo special. Just my .02

Those mounts look pretty nice and beefy. The problem is that you have to remove the rear sight. I refuse to own a scoped rifle that doesn't also have a set of iron sights, just in case something happens to the scope.

I ended up ordering the following mount:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Mosin-Nagant-See...1%7C240%3A1318

It is expensive, but it is heavy duty, and is see through allowing use of sights. I also like that it is reversible, allowing it to be used traditionally or as a scout mounted scope. If you don't use it as a scout mount, then you will need to get a bent bolt handle. It also does not require any modification to the rifle, which is a big no-no with milsurp collectors. If there is a ban on weapons and imports, there is a good chance that these 'cheap' WWII Mosins will become very expensive at some point in the future - so no sense drilling and making permanent modifications.

I was also willing to pay the price because the guy who makes them is a member of a gun and game forum, and I figured I'd rather give him some business instead of buying chinese made junk...

YES! Darrell's "scout" Mosin Nagant mount is very nice. I've got one of his mounts on a Finn Mosin Nagant 39 rifle, and it works well. Very secure, no permanent modifications needed to the rifle. No need for a bent bolt (as needed with the Advanced Rifle Parts mount).

I got mine in the mail the other day, the Darrell's mount. It is indeed very solid construction, better fitting, and comes with good instructions. Total turnaround was less than one week, shipping etc. Pretty good service, IMO.

Now I need to go to the range. :D
